The South Burlington Compost Facility was completed in June of 2002. The compost facility is located adjacent to the South Burlington Wastewater Treatment Plant and provides the City an alternative means of biosolids disposal other than traditional land application. In the compost process, treated biosolids are combined with ground or shredded organic matter (usually wood chips or leaves) and aerated in large piles at temperatures of 131 degrees or higher for 5 consecutive days.
The compost is further processed for a minimum of 40 days and then tested to make sure that stringent federal regulations and standards for compost are being met. This process makes compost safe for use in and around areas with high human activity such as landscaping in parks and residential areas.
