NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Youth Football Competition

Burlington Recreation & Parks presents the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Youth Football Competition. AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day featuring Rin Tin Tin

Jiggs Askew Memorial Bark Park
The Alamance Kennel Club will sponsor the second annual AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day at the Jiggs Askew Memorial Bark Park.  The fun will begin with a special pet parade around the dog park. The theme for the event is “Patriotic Pooches” and there will be scores dressed in the ever-popular red, white and blue.
One of the highlights of the day will be the Responsible Dog Ownership Program presented by Rin Tin Tin, the world’s most famous German Shepherd Dog. The program will appeal to youth as well as adults and includes information helpful to anyone who might come in contact with a dog. In addition, those attending will have the opportunity to have their picture taken with Rin Tin Tin with the proceeds benefiting the Humane Society of Alamance County. 
The event will also include herding, obedience, agility, fly ball and K-9 unit demonstrations guaranteed to delight audience members. Serious fanciers will be on hand to share information about the various performance sports with audience members.  Added features of the day will include plenty of food vendors and contests for pets of all kinds. Organizers have also planned rabies and microchip clinics to allow residents the opportunity to secure their pets vaccinations and identification in one convenient location.  For additional information contact Kathy Myers at (336) 437-6109.

Dog Splash

Maynard Aquatic Center
Burlington Recreation & Parks and the Humane Society of Alamance County present “Dog Splash”.  Dog lovers bring your favorite canine friend to the Maynard Aquatic Center for a “doggie dip.”  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Humane Society of Alamance County. Proof of rabies vaccination must be provided on the day of the event.  Owner must stay with dog at all times.  No dogs in heat or aggressive dogs.  For more information or to register, please call 222-5043.  Pre-registration is required.

Burlington Carousel Festival

The Annual Burlington Carousel Festival will mark its 23rd anniversary on September 18th & 19th at Burlington City Park. The Dentzel Menagerie Carousel, one of the most historic treasures in Burlington was built around 1910 by the Dentzel Family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and will celebrate it’s 100th Anniversary at this year’s event. Each year the city comes together to celebrate the Carousel by hosting the Annual Carousel Festival. Artists Alley, an area where fine artists and craft exhibitors display and exhibit their work features original Carousel wood carvers as well as paintings and much more. The Children's area offers families the opportunity to take a ride on the Carousel or one of the other amusement activities that are permanently located in the park. Bring a chair and enjoy the sites and sounds of the local music and entertainment.

The Main Stage area will feature a National Country Recording Artist, Sunday, September 19th as well as many local and regional favorites throughout the weekend. And no one can forget the wonderful aroma of our food court, which is provided by local non-profit agencies from right here within the community.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and Burlington Recreation & Parks presents the Hunter Education Program.  This program is designed to promote the safe handling of firearms and archery equipment, teach responsible, ethical conduct by hunters, educate sportsmen in the various methods and the proper use id equipment harvesting game, and endorse the importance of wildlife management laws and regulations.  Participants will receive their Hunter's Safety Certification and badge after passing a written exam.  Participants must pre-register and attend both days.  For more information or to register please visit North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission or call (336) 623-8435 to register (9am-9pm only).

Sign With Your Baby classes are designed to give parents the knowledge and tools to teach their hearing babies how to communicate through American Sign Language. The session is taught by Rebecca Chavis, certified Sign2Me instructor and interpreter with Alamance Burlington School System.  Teaching infants to sign is easy and has many benefits; the most important is early communication. Teaching your baby to use signs will reduce the guesswork you have to do as a parent, because your child will be able to express their wants and feelings. It will also reduce temper tantrums! Sunset Canoe Trip & Poker Paddle

Guilford Mackintosh Park & Marina
The Burlington Recreation & Parks Department, Get Outdoors Inc. of Greensboro, and Just Pizza of Gibsonville presents a Sunset Canoe Trip and Poker Paddle.  Boaters will leave from Guilford Mackintosh Marina and paddle down the Little Alamance Creek to a patrol boat located at the Wheeler Bridge Road bridge where they will receive two poker cards.  They will then travel back up the Little Alamance Creek to a patrol boat located at the pipe over the lake behind the old Konica building where they will also receive two poker cards.  Boaters will continue back to the marina where they will then receive the last poker card.  The paddlers choosing not to complete the full trip will have the option of playing the cards that they were not able to receive. Bring your binoculars and watch the waters edge for wildlife.  Boaters will enjoy a pizza dinner at the trip’s completion.  Please call (336) 449-2078 for more information or to pre-register.  Space is limited.

Women’s Safety & Empowerment Workshop

Instructors will cover Personal Protection with women, covering everything from learning what is Personal Protection vs. Self-Defense, what women can do to prevent an attack from happening, and what to do if an attack actually occurs.
