Afterschool & Rec Day Programs
Burlington Recreation and Parks provide various child care programs for afterschool, teacher workdays, some holidays and occasional snow days.
Afterschool programs provided a healthy dinner, snack, homework assistance, and organized games in a safe, fun, recreational environment to keep children active and engaged in physical activities. Full-time and part-time options are available. Rec Days provide fun and engaging activities during teacher workdays, certain holidays, and select snow days. Register online for afterschool or rec days programs (click on the "Camps & Childcare" tab).

2023-2024 Afterschool Program
Children are provided a healthy dinner (tentative), snack, homework assistance, and organized games in a safe, fun, recreational environment to keep children active and engaged in physical activities, enhancing their daily routine. There will be special activities throughout the school year with field trips, special guests offering fun projects and treats. Full-time and part-time options are available!
To reserve a spot for your child at an Afterschool Program, register online (click on the "Camps & Childcare" tab) or in person at the Recreation & Parks Administrative Office. Sites are tentative based on enrollment.
To be eligible for Afterschool & Rec Days:
- a child must currently attend kindergarten AND
- be 5 years old on or before August 31, 2023.

Program Sites
Burlington Recreation and Parks and the Alamance-Burlington School System offer Afterschool Programs at the following locations:
- Andrews Elementary
- Grove Park Elementary
- Hillcrest Elementary
- Smith Elementary and Newlin Elementary (@ Thataways Youth Center)
*We must have a minimum of 10 students to operate any Afterschool program.
Important Program Information
Registration
Afterschool registration is available online and in-person at the Burlington Recreation & Parks Administration Office (1333 Overbrook Road, Burlington, NC 27215). Space is limited at each afterschool site. For those starting after the first of the month, you must register in person to receive the pro-rated monthly fee.
- If registering online, all questions and waivers must be answered/signed electronically before you are able to check out. Please answer each question with as much detail as possible.
Fees
- Full-time (picked up by 6 pm sharp): $140/month per child
- Part-time (picked up by 4:30 pm sharp): $90/month per child
There is no enrollment fee, supply fee, or transportation fee for Afterschool. Switching statuses (part-time and full-time) must be made before the 1st of the month & cannot be changed once that month begins or is paid.
Parents that are late picking up their child will be charged a late fee of $1 per minute per family. The late fee must be paid before your child can return. If you are consistently late, your child will be dropped from the program.
Payment
Afterschool full and part-time fees are due BEFORE the 1st of every month and must be kept current. If payments are not received before the 1st of every month, your child will not be able to attend the program until it is paid. For those starting after the first of the month, you must register in person to receive the pro-rated monthly fee.
Payments can be made:
- In person at the Recreation Administrative Office (1333 Overbrook Road) by appointment only.
- Online - click on the "Camps & Childcare" tab.
- Phone payments can be made over the phone if your card is saved on file with civic rec. 336-222-5030 ext. 0
- By drop box at the Recreation Administrative Office. Check or money orders only - please be sure to include the following on your check or money order: your driver's license #, phone #, child's name and program site.
Refund Policy
There are no refunds or transferable options for Afterschool payments. (i.e. payments cannot be transferred to another Burlington Recreation & Parks program, another month or to the next school year).

Creating an Account for Online Registration
Registration can now be completed online using CivicRec! If you are a new user, please follow the directions below to assist in creating your account. If you have an existing account, log in to register. If you need any assistance with setting up your account, please call 336-222-5030 or email us.
- Visit https://secure.rec1.com/NC/burlington-nc/catalog.
- On your desktop, select Log In/Create Account in the top left corner, then select Create Your Account.
- On mobile devices, select Account in the upper right corner and then select Sign Up.
- Fill out all the required information (address, personal info, contact numbers, etc..) To receive text alerts regarding programming (cancellations, important info), make sure to select your mobile carrier next to your cell phone number.
- Add additional members (spouse, children, etc.) at any time in your account settings - this keeps your entire household in one convenient account. If using a mobile device, to add additional members you must select 'Desktop Version' in the left-hand menu.
Rec Days
Dates: Teacher workdays, select holidays, some snow days (see below). View the 2022-23 Rec Days Schedule.
Times: 7:30 am - 6:00 pm
Ages: Elementary School Students
Location: Thataways Youth Center • 1331 Overbrook Road, Burlington, NC 27215
Fee: $15/student per Rec Day (Rec Days no longer included in Afterschool registration. There are no 2nd or 3rd child rates for this program.)
*To be eligible for Rec Days: 1) a child must currently attend kindergarten AND 2) be 5 years old on or before August 31, 2023.
*Rec Days must have a minimum of 10 paid participants to operate.
Registration
You can register online or in person at the Recreation Administrative Office.
A hard copy of the receipt must be presented at sign-in for participants who register on the day of the program. Money can not be accepted on-site. Participants must be paid before they can attend the program. If you are delinquent in Camp or Afterschool payments, your child will not be eligible to attend Rec Days. There are no refunds or transferable options for Rec Day payments.
What to Wear
- Sturdy sneakers & socks (no flip flops, sandals or crocs)
- Sunscreen
- Coats as the seasons change (we play outside!)
- Clothes you do not mind getting dirt or paint on throughout the active day
What to Bring
- Bottle of water with child’s name on it
- Morning snack (afternoon snack will be provided)
- Healthy lunch and drink (microwave will not be available)
- The Afterschool Meal program will NOT operate during Rec Days.
- On certain days, Thataways Time will be offered. Children may purchase healthy concessions or play arcade games & pool during this time. Children will also play dance games to win prizes at no charge. Money can be brought but is not required.
- Hard copy of the receipt for participants who register the day of the program.

Snow Day Rec Days
Dates: Snow days - when the children are out of school due to snow, but the accumulation has stopped, and road conditions are clear enough for our families and staff to attend safely.
Times: Depends on the weather conditions.
Ages: Elementary School Students*
Location: Thataways Youth Center • 1331 Overbrook Road, Burlington, NC 27215
Fee: $15/student per Snow Day Rec Day. There are no 2nd or 3rd child rates for this program.
*To be eligible for Rec Days: 1) a child must currently attend kindergarten AND 2) be 5 years old on or before August 31, 2023.
*Snow Day Rec Days must have a minimum of 10 paid participants to operate.
*Registration must be received online or at the Recreation Administrative Office before drop off.
