Destination Burlington is Burlington's Long-Range Land Use Plan, completed in 2015, this plan lays out the vision for the future of Burlington and directly led to the establishment of this department. Many of our department's directives and goals stem from this report and our department continues to work diligently to complete them.

Design Burlington, Burlington's Unified Development Ordinance was passed by the City Council on July 16, 2019. This Development Ordinance goes into effect November 1, 2019 and makes many changes to development standards and allowances going forward. If you have any questions on how this may affect you, contact our Planning Department at 336-222-5110. See the full report here

Maple Avenue Corridor
, a two year initiative passed at the June 18, 2019 City Council Meeting outlines a plan for the revitalization of Burlington's Maple Avenue. This is a conceptual plan that is not set in stone, many aspects of the plan may change at its final approval but the plan has been approved in concept. Stretching from just below Interstate 40/85 to the heart of Burlington's Downtown, this gateway into our City is in need of development and change. The goals of the plan require heavy investment in transportation infrastructure and as a result the City has applied to BUILD Grant through the US Department of Transportation. This grant has the potential for a $25 million award and would greatly affect the City's ability to push the project forward and spur private investment.
  • Update November, 2019: The BUILD Grant awards have been announced and Burlington's application was not selected. Efforts will be made in the next cycle to apply for the BUILD Grants in 2020.
