Minimum Housing

The City of Burlington finds that dwellings exist in the city which are unfit for human habitation due to dilapidation; defects increasing the hazards of fire, accidents and other calamities; lack of ventilation, light and sanitary facilities; and other conditions rendering such dwellings unsafe or insanitary, dangerous and detrimental to the health, safety and otherwise the welfare of the residents of the city.

There also exist abandoned dwellings which the city finds to be a health or safety hazard as a result of the attraction of insects or rodents, conditions creating a fire hazard, dangerous conditions constituting a threat to children or frequent use by vagrants as living quarters in the absence of sanitary facilities. Buildings unfit for human habitation are hereby declared to be a public nuisance and shall either be repaired or rehabilitated to the standards of the Minimum Housing ordinances of the City of Burlington or demolished in accordance with the procedures listed in the ordinances. Please feel free to follow this link to the Minimum Housing chapter in the City’s Code of Ordinances for further information, or contact the Planning Department at 336-222-5110.
